GREEK ISLANDS FOR
ARCHITECTURE
Reflecting a long history of conquests and occupation, the architectural
style on the Greek Islands is consistent only in its variety. From cheerfully
pastel-coloured villages to the ubiquitous crumbling ruins, here are a few
iconic buildings to look out for.
Colourful Domestic
Architecture
The history of conquest
across the Greek Islands can
often be seen on the homes of
the locals, from the Venetian-
influenced pitched tiled roofs,
ornate portals and external
chimneys on Crete (p245)
and Corfu Town (p64) to
the overhanging lath-and-
plaster upper storeys that
copy Ottoman style in the
Northeast Aegean. And Greek
homes aren’t all shades of
white and blue – look out for
the vibrantly painted façades
brightening harbours and
hillsides all over the islands.
