GREEK ISLANDS FOR
NATURE LOVERS
If you want to get wild in the Greek Islands, look beyond the beach bars and
clubs of Mýkonos and Rhodes to the abundant flora and fauna found inland
and in the water. From the majestic turtles of the Ionian islands to the
blooming flowers brightening Crete, there’s plenty of life to explore here.
Majestic Monk Seals
The Mediterranean monk seal is Europe’s most
endangered mammal, with only around 400
left in the wild. At least sixty of these live in
the northern Sporádes, principally in the sea
caves of Alónissos, where they are protected
as part of a national marine park (p113). You
can take a boat tour through the marine park,
but spotting one of these sleek black creatures
requires a large slice of good fortune.
