Here We Go Again
The superlative views on Skiáthos (p114) and
Skópelos (p116) are enough to make anyone
burst into song – so, naturally, the islands
were the perfect location for the 2008 smash
hit musical Mamma Mia! Skópelans have
eagerly used this for marketing purposes ever
since, and the islands have attracted legions
of fans. Most familiar of the island locations is

GREEK ISLANDS
ON SCREEN
Forget about Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan, the Greek Islands were the
true stars of Mamma Mia! The islands sparkle on the silver screen, and the
numerous movies filmed here have lured visitors hoping to relive some of
the magic themselves. Here are a few of our favourites.
Doing the Zorba
It’s an iconic moment in Greek
cinematic history when Basil
and Zorba, disappointed in
love, put their arms around
each other and danced off the
screen and into our hearts.
Zorba the Greek, based on the
eponymous book by Nikos
Kazantzakis, was filmed in
1964 on Crete – such was its
popularity that the “Zorba”
has become a dance classic.
