A little over a century ago some woodcutters, travel ling over
the mountain range that dominates the Lanaittu valley,
discovered a nuraghic settlement hidden in the depths of an
enormous chasm in Monte Tiscali. The village of Tiscali, which
had been inhabited up to the time of the Roman invasion,
consists of a number of round dwellings with juniper wood
architraves around the doors and roofs. Years of neglect have
led to the partial deterioration of the site, but it is still one of
the most exciting nuraghic finds in Sardinia, in particular
because of its unique position. The climb to Tiscali can be The Path to the Village
hazardous and tiring, and is over rocky ground. Red arrows on the
rocks in dicate the way
to the village.
Dwellings
Round nuraghic dwellings
are still visible among the
crumbling rocks and ruins.
KEY
1 The chasm had no natural
springs, so the inhabitants collected
water that dripped down the walls
of the rock.
2 The roofs were made of
juniper wood.
3 The walls of the dwellings were Bronze Model
made of limestone blocks. Cagliari’s Museo Archeologico (see
p62) has a model of the dwellings.
