The Kiso River runs through a picturesque moun ain valley
that was the route of the Nakasendo, one of the Edo-
period post roads. Take a drive along this ancient route,
stopping at the 11 charming post towns en route. START
Tsumago, Narai, and Magome, in particular, still retain Kiso-Hirasawa
much of that atmosphere, their narrow streets lined Narai
with wooden inns and stores. Parts of the old Torii Pass
Nakasendo walking trail, especially between Kiso
Tsumago and Magome, are as they were Yabuhara
in the Edo days and can be followed past
woods, farms, and milestones. More
challenging hiking is found on
