       This tiny 700-year-old former
       castle town, tucked into a river
       valley deep in the moun tains,
       has a large number of well-
       preserved samurai houses.
       Thousands of carp inhabit the
       town’s brooks, outnumbering
       the residents, it is said, by ten

       Inari Shrine is one of the most
