                                               A statue of an imperial
                                               minister in a niche on
                                               the Yomeimon Gate





               Over an entrance in the east
               corridor is a tiny, exquisite
               carving of a sleeping cat.

                                        leading to the inner shrine


                                              The Niomon (or Omotemon) Gate
                                              is guarded by two fear some Nio
                                              figures, one with an open mouth
                                              and the other with a closed mouth.

        monkeys (the guardians
        of horses) decorates the
         otherwise unadorned
             sacred stable.
                         Donated by a
                     daimyo in 1650, this
                      five-story pagoda       Granite Torii (gate)
                      was rebuilt in 1818
                          after a fire.
