                                  connecting chamber.
                                         The Karamon Gate is adorned
                                         with delicate carvings, such as
                                         a pair of cranes.

                                              The bell tower forms a
                                              pair with the adjacent
                                              drum tower.


                                                  The stepped complex
                                                  of the refined
                                                  Taiyuin-byo shrine


                                                     The Yashamon
                                                     Gate is also known as
                                                     Botanmon, or peony
                                                     gate, after its detailed
                                                     floral carvings.







                                               Four guardian statues
                                               occupy the niches on the
                                               Nitenmon Gate.


                                           On the ceiling above the
                                           basin of this fountain is
                                           a dragon painting by
                                           Kano Yasunobu.



                                            Stone lanterns were
                                            donated over the years
                                            by daimyo.


                                                    HIDDEN GEM
                                                    Stairway to
                                                    Heaven
                                                 Although permanently
                                                 locked, it is worth seeing
                                                 the final Kokamon Gate,
                                                 which leads to Iemitsu’s
                                                 ashes. The staircase
                                 Niomon Gate     winds behind this
                                                 Chinese-style gate into
                                                 towering cedar trees.
