CANADA FOR
AMAZING ART
Canada’s lush forests and majestic mountains have long inspired artists.
Many Canadian-born artists went to study abroad and returned to their
home country to explore the wilderness armed with a paintbrush, using
new styles to capture the unique beauty of its native people and terrain.
Maurice Cullen
Maurice Cullen (1866–1934) left Montreal to
study art in Paris. His discovery there of the
work of the Impressionists had a profound
influence on his style, which can be seen in
landscapes such as A Misty Afternoon, St. John’s,
Newfoundland (1910). He was a prominent
member of the Canadian Art Club, a collective
that encouraged the growth of national art.
