          beautiful rings of blue

The giant spined sea star, Pisaster
giganteus, can grow up to 61 centimetres
(24 inches), hence its name. It can vary in
colour but is generally light brown with
blue rings around its spines. It can be
found on rocky shores along the western
coast of North America, from British
Columbia to Baja, California. It preys on
          molluscs, mussels and barnacles.
