Street-by-Street: Dorsoduro

Built on a stratum of solid subsoil is the sestiere of Dorsoduro – the name means
“hard backbone”. It has as its focal point the lively Campo Santa Margherita,
the largest open space in this part of Venice. The square bustles with activity,
particularly in the morning, when the market stalls are open, and in the evening
when it is the haunt of students from nearby Ca’ Foscari, now part of the University
of Venice. The surrounding streets contain some architectural stunners,
notably Ca’ Rezzonico and the Scuola Grande dei Carmini, which has
decorations by Tiepolo. Of the area’s waterways, the delightful Rio
San Barnaba is best appreciated from the Ponte dei Pugni, near
the barge selling fruit and vegetables – itself a time-honoured
Venetian sight. Alongside the Rio Terà Canal there are some Campo Santa M A R G H E R I T A
lively cafés and a fascinating shop selling masks for Carnevale. Margherita is
