The Grand Tour
The treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle in 1748 marked the
start of 50 years of peace. It was about this time
that Italy, with its great art treasures and Classical
ruins, including the newly excavated Pompeii,
became Europe’s first great tourist destination.
Young English “milords” visited Rome, Florence
and Venice as part of a new type of pilgrimage,
the Grand Tour, while artists and poets sought
