BALANCE

Barry’s Senior Bootcamp? We often
take a softly-softly approach to
exercise among older people, suggesting
gardening, walking or stretching. But
according to new research, the key
to staving of dementia is upping the
intensity. When people aged between
60 and 88 exercised in short, sharp
bursts, their memory improved up to
30 per cent, while those who worked
out moderately saw no improvement.
They were monitored over 12 weeks
and took three sessions a week. The
HIIT group did four sets of high-
intensity exercise on a treadmill for
four minutes, followed by a recovery
period, while the rest either did
moderate-intensity aerobic exercise
for nearly 50 minutes continuously, or
stretching – and the HIIT group were
the only ones who saw a substantial
improvement in memory. So train
harder for your body, and your brain.
