Chewbacca
For Chewbacca’s style, Grispo reveals that, “Early
on, we started to think about seeing a full-on display of
Chewbacca’s power. Is he as strong as an ox, or as strong
as a bear? Once we had worked out those parameters, we
were able to develop the cinematic action.”
The stunt team took full advantage of Joonas Suotamo’s
athleticism when designing action sequences involving the
mighty Wookiee. “Joonas was very quick to pick up the
moves,” notes Grispo, “and he loved to do it. That was a
tremendous benefi t to the stunt team.”
Despite working to offer up something fresh and new
with Chewbacca for audiences to enjoy, the Solo team felt
a responsibility to ensure they maintained continuity of
body language with Peter Mayhew’s original portrayal of
the character. To do this, they closely rewatched Mayhew’s
performances in the original Star Wars trilogy, the end
result being a seamless transition between the two actors.
“The stunt team took full adv antage of Joonas
Suotamo ’s athleticism when designing action sequences
involving the mighty Wookiee.”
Masters
Of Teräs
Käsi
In Solo: A Star Wars Story, we learn that Qi’ra has
been trained in Teräs Käsi by her boss, Dryden Vos—a
practitioner of an extreme martial art that had previously
only appeared in a Star Wars videogame. A key facet of
the Teräs Käsi style is that it lends a fi ghter extreme speed
and an aptitude for anticipating strikes from an opponent.
However, beyond animated pixels, the fi ghting
style had never been truly defi ned. The Solo stunt team
therefore needed to research and create Teräs Käsi from
scratch, building its signature moves and use of weapons
before they could teach Emilia Clarke (Qi’ra) and Paul
Bettany (Dryden Vos).
The art department had designed exotic double-
bladed daggers for Vos, the likes of which the stunt team
had never seen before, so they tagged them as a Teräs
Käsi trademark weapon, as well as Qi’ra’s sword. Grispo
says: “It has a pretty unique look. It almost looks like a
fork combined with a sword, in that it has a separation
within the blade.”
