England’s South Coast at a Glance

The Normans established the counties of England for
administrative purposes; those along the South Coast
roughly tally with the earlier kingdoms of the Anglo-
Saxons. While each county has retained an identity
of its own, there is a noticeable difference between
the gently undulating landscape of the South East
and the wilder countryside of the South West, with
its long, rugged peninsula tapering down to Land’s
End. Whether visitors wish to discover the medieval
architecture of the great cathedrals and castles, explore
the stunning variety of the countryside, or simply
enjoy the beauty of the miles of coastline, this region
offers a huge array of attractions throughout the year. Stourhead (see pp106–7)

A national park since 1951, Dartmoor’s bleak but beautiful
landscape is dotted with huge outcrops of granite called
tors (an Old English word meaning high rocky hill).

This is mainland Britain’s westernmost point. It features
the arch of Enys Dodnan, beyond which are the rocks
collectively known as the Armed Knight.
