Street-by-Street: The Mall
This 1 mile (1.5 km) boulevard between the Capitol and the
Washington Monument is the city’s cultural heart; the many
different museums of the Smithsonian Institution can be found
along this green strip. At the northeast corner of the Mall is the
National Gallery of Art. Directly opposite is one of the most popular
museums in the world – the National Air and Space Museum, a
soaring construction of steel and glass. Both the National Museum
of American History and the National Museum of Natural History,
on the north side of the Mall, also draw huge numbers of visitors.
