1 Anne Frank Huis
On 6 July 1942, to avoid their Nazi persecutors, the
Jewish Frank family moved from Merwedeplein to the
rear annexe of the house at Prinsengracht 263. Anne;
her mother, Edith; her father, Otto; and her older sister,
Margot, lived here, along with the Van Pels family and
dentist Fritz Pfeffer. It was here that Anne wrote her
famous diary. On 4 August 1944, the annexe was The Secret Entrance
raided by the Gestapo. All those hiding there were Behind the hinged bookcase was
arrested and taken to Nazi concentration camps. a small suite of rooms where the
eight hideaways lived.

This photograph was taken in
1942, when Anne started writing
in the now-famous diary that she
had been given on 12 June 1942,
her 13th birthday. Less than one
month later, the Frank family went
into hiding.
