The Onder de Linden Chapel, located just
outside the town of Thorn in Limburg, was
founded in 1673 by Clara Elisabeth van
                                      Manderscheidt-Blankenheim, who lies buried
in the parish church of Thorn. This chapel,
dedicated to St Mary, is opulently decorated
                                      with carvings and Baroque paintings
depicting scenes of the life of the Virgin Mary.
Shown in the picture on the left is the Onze-

St Mary’s Chapel is also called the Loretokapel,
after the Holy House of Nazareth in the Italian
town of Loreto, on which the earlier
17th-century part of the chapel is based.

                                        Michielsgestel. The
                                         medieval church
                                        was built in honour
                                         of the archangel
                                       Michael. The village,
                                       also named after the
                                           saint, grew up
                                        around the church.
                                         Neglect and the
                                          elements have
                                          meant that the
                                       church building itself
                                       has been levelled to
                                       the ground, but the
                                          solid tower has
                                       withstood the ages.

abbey at Kerkrade which today houses
a Catholic middle school and a training
school for priests, has a fine altar depicting
the Lamb of God. The Lamb of God
represents Christ, who was sacrificed in
the same way as a lamb, in order to take
away the sins of the world.
