Sint Jan
There was a church of Sint Jan (St John) in Den
Bosch as early as the beginning of the 13th
century, although nothing of the original
Romanesque church exists today. The present-
day Gothic church was built from the late 14th
to the 16th century. The majestic cathedral
survived the Iconoclastic Riots of 1566 (see p56)
and a devastating fire in 1584. The damaged
building is undergoing continuous restoration.
. Organ
The great organ (1617)
was fully refurbished in
1985 and restored to its
original state.
Statue of St Mary
The 13th-century miracle-
working figure of the Zoete
Lieve Vrouw of Den Bosch
(Our Good Lady of Den
Bosch) was for centuries
kept in Brussels, but was
returned to Sint Jan in 1853.
