8 Street-by-Street: Maastricht
Maastricht emerged in Roman times at a point along the River
Maas which could be crossed on foot (Mosae Traiectum), on
the Roman road that led from Colonia Agrippina (Cologne) to
Bononia (Boulogne). The founder of Christian Maastricht was
St Serviatus, bishop of Tongeren, who died in AD 384 in
Maastricht and was buried in the cemetery then located
outside the town walls. The magnificent basilica of St Servaas
was built over his tomb. In addition to the basilica, another Sculpture of Pieke
