                   mass-produced metal
                    wire as early as the

                    1500s, the material
                     wasn’t applied to
                   baskets—traditionally
                   used for egg collecting
                  —until the 1800s. By the
                   late 19th century, these
                  handmade forms ranged
                     from the standard
                  (globe-like, rectangular)
                   to whimsical (hearts,
                    chickens). Today, an
                   early French piece can
                   command $100, while
                   American pieces from
                   the ’40s and ’50s can
                   be had for $25 to $50.
