Wild West
In Finistère – literally,
“the end of the earth” –
Île d’Ouessant (p272) is
the most westerly point
of continental France.
An hour’s boat trip from
Le Conquet on the mainland,
it’s perfect for exploring by
bike, past whitewashed
granite cottages out to
the breathtaking Pointe
de Pern, dotted with
lighthouses. Here you
can look down – from the
safety of the clifftop – at the
wild Atlantic waves that
have sent countless ships
crashing against the dark
rocks to meet their fate.

Scenic Pointe du Raz
On the far west coast of Finistère, the
Pointe du Raz (p277) is a moorland
peninsula that juts out into the sea.
Heather and gorselined paths lead
to aweinspiring clifffaces pounded
by the powerful Atlantic waves and
spectacular views over the Raz de
Sein, a perilous
stretch of water

The Long and
Winding Odet River
One of Brittany’s most
beautiful rivers, the Odet runs
from the Montagnes Noires.
Catch a ferry and travel down
stream through the stunning
Stangala gorges to flow gently
past Quimper (p274) before
meeting the sea at Bénodet
(Breton for “river mouth”), a
pretty little fishing town
with an expansive beach.
