THE SEAFARERS
OF ST-MALO
St-Malo owes its wealth
to its mariners. In 1698
Breton sailors col onized
the Îles Malouines, now
known as Las Malvinas
or the Falklands. By the
17th century St-Malo
was France’s largest
port and famous for
its corsairs. It was the
riches won by trade and
piracy that enabled the
town’s shipowners to
build the great houses

1 One of St-Malo’s most
illustrious corsairs was the
intrepid Robert Surcouf
(1773–1827), whose ships
hounded vessels of the
British East India Company.
2 In 1534 Jacques Cartier
discovered the mouth of the
St Lawrence and claimed the
territory for France; he is
buried in the 12th-century
Cathédrale St-Vincent.
3 The Château de St-Malo
houses the mairie, or town
hall, and the city’s museum.
