                              . Mount Katmai and Novarupta
In June 1912, severe earthquakes around Mount Katmai led to a
       Key
cataclysmic eruption that covered the surrounding tundra with
Minor road volcanic debris. It was initially thought that Mount Katmai had
erupted, but Novarupta proved to be the source. As Novarupta’s
          Park boundary
explosion emptied Mount Katmai’s magma chamber, Katmai’s
Peak summit collapsed, leaving a caldera with a crater lake.
