Exploring Brussels

The division of brussels into lower Town and upper Town reflects the
lie of the land. With the grand Place at its focus, the lower Town is the
floodplain of the river Senne, which now runs underground. To the
east, the land rises to reach the Place royale, site of the musée des
instruments de musique and musées royaux des beaux arts. a ridge
runs all the way from the Palais de Justice, past notre-dame du
Sablon and rue royal to just north of the Centre belge de la bande
dessinée. This shape traces the former line of the 14th-century city
walls. Further east, the upper Town becomes more residential and
dedi cated to running the businesses of the european union.
