4 Market Square: North and West Sides
The charter given to Krakow in 1257
determined the plan of the city. The square
located in the middle of the medieval city has
remained the centre of Krakow ever since. This
square, some 200 m (656 ft) by 200 m (656 ft), is
surrounded by a regular grid of streets, with three
streets on each side. Only the off-the-grid location
of the Church of St Mary, which pre-dates the
charter, and Grodzka Street, with its funnel-like
shape, vary the rigidity of the urban planning in this Deer House
area. There were formerly many buildings in the square, This was once an inn. Johann

“Piwnica Pod Baranami” Cabaret
The cabaret which is housed in the Palace of the Rams was
established in 1956. Although it was originally intended to exist
no longer than “five years, possibly even less”, the cabaret has been
active for more than 50 years and is one of Krakow’s top attractions.
Piotr Skrzynecki (1930–97) was the founder and heart and soul of
the cabaret. Wiesław Dymny, Ewa Demarczyk, Marek Grechuta,
