The Crypt in the Church “On the Rock”
Jan Długosz, the great Polish historian of the Middle Ages, was buried in the crypt
beneath the Church “On the Rock” in 1480. In 1876 it was decided to transform the
crypt into a national pantheon for the burial of those who had made important
contributions to Polish culture. The architect Teofil Żebrawski remodelled the crypt,
transforming it into a gallery with a separate chapel housing the altar. Recesses were
designed to house the sarcophagi. The stained-glass window above the altar depicts
the Madonna of Częstochowa, the Queen of Poland. Coats of arms of provinces of
the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth were painted on the vault.
