A One-Hour Walk around Zwierzyniec
In the 12th century Zwierzyniec was a small village, founded
as the endowment to the Premonstratensian nuns, whose
convent was located by the Rudawa river, a tributary of the
Vistula. Polish sovereigns used to take a rest in the royal
gardens located in this village. Henri de Valois is reputed to
have organized orgies here to the outrage of his subjects.
The richest Krakovians followed in the kings’ footsteps by
establishing their country residences in Zwierzyniec. Despite
being incorporated into Krakow in the early 20th century,
Zwierzyniec has managed to retain its original village character.
