The focal point of this port city,
built on and around the slopes of
verdant Mount Carmel, is the Baha’i
     Gardens, containing the golden
Shrine of the Bab. In the German
     Colony, Ben-Gurion Street is lined
     with attractive Templer buildings,
many of which have been turned
     into restaurants, bars, or hotels.
Haifa has a mixed population, and
the lanes of the Arab area of Wadi
     Nisnas contain great local eateries.
The Carmel Center district, high atop
     Mount Carmel, has some excellent
restaurants, while the port is popular
for its nightlife. Museum buffs will be
spoiled for choice, as the city boasts
     excellent art, science, and maritime
     museums (see pp24–5).
