Dead Sea and
the Negev
Rich in fascinating ancient sites, this region is
where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered and
Jewish rebels atop Masada defied the Romans.
At the Dead Sea, spas and mineral-rich waters
attract tourists and cure-seekers. Freshwater
springs at Ein Gedi oasis create a surprising
swathe of lush vegetation amid the arid hills. In the
high Negev Desert, the vast crater of Makhtesh
Ramon is best explored on foot. The Nabateans,
builders of Petra, also established cities here,
Entrance, Timna while at the southern tip of Israel, the resort
National Park city of Eilat is famed for its Red Sea coral reefs.
