VACCINE DISCOVERY
In 1879, when Pasteur was
researching a poultry disease
called chicken cholera, he realized
that weakened strains of a disease
could be used to create a vaccine
against the full-strength disease. This
discovery helped him to develop
vaccines against anthrax and rabies.

FIGHTING RABIES
Pasteur produced a vaccine for
rabies (an infectious disease that
affects humans and animals) in
1885. His first rabies patient was
nine-year-old Joseph Meister, who
had been bitten by an infected dog.
Pasteur became a national hero
after the boy made a full recovery.
