SUPER MOLD IN GOOD HEALTH
This close-up image taken by a scanning electron
microscope (see p.235) shows penicillium mold,
which is used to create penicillin, the world’s first
antibiotic. Its bacteria-killing properties were discovered
by accident in 1928 by the Scottish doctor Sir Alexander
Fleming. Penicillin and other antibiotics have since
saved millions of lives.
