                                                  The comet has two lobes (or parts),
                                                  which suggests that two smaller
                                                  bodies probably joined together.

                                                              its Russian discoverers in
                                                              1969. Recently, spacecraft
                                                             and probes have spent long
                                                              periods studying its dusty
                                                              surface and dark interior.




                                                               The coal-colored crust has
                                                               an outer layer of carbon-
                                                               based material. Inside,
                                                               the comet’s small core
                                                               is a “dirty snowball”
                                                               made up of ice and dust.
