ENTRANCE HOLES
A sociable weaver’s nest
is dotted with entrance
holes for the birds to
access their own chamber
within the nest. Straw is
positioned in spikes
around the holes to
keep invaders out.
Nests are usually built in
the safety of trees with high
branches to avoid predators.
Which bird builds
the largest nests?
The sociable weaver of southern Africa constructs
the largest nests of any bird, building one giant nest
for the entire colony. These intricate structures can
be 13 ft (4 m) in height.
