SOLAR POWER

At close range, the sun’s surface
is a hotbed of activity. Gas jets,
called spicules, fire up repeatedly.
Great looping clouds and swaths
of cooler gas, called prominences,
reach into space. The distinctive
orange-peel texture of the surface,
