Notre-Dame’s St Stephen’s
door (porte St-Etienne) faces
this pleasant garden square,
dedicated to Pope John XXIII.
The garden runs alongside the
river and is an excellent place
for enjoying the sculptures, rose
windows and flying buttresses
of the east end of the cathedral.
From the 17th century, the
square was occupied by the
archbishop’s palace, which was Gallo-Roman ruins in the Crypte Archéologique
