One of the oldest French sporting dogs, this breed has
bloodlines that include the English Foxhound (see p.158) and
the Otterhound (see p.142). Used for tracking wild boar, the
Griffon Nivernais has great endurance. It may work
individually but usually hunts in
a pack. The rough, tousled coat
provides protection against
thick vegetation.

Briquet means “medium sized”—an apt description for this White and
well proportioned hound. A handsome and determined chaser orange
of wild boar and roe deer, it is a scaled-down version of the
Grand Griffon Vendéen (opposite), from which it was bred.
