                       Entrance Gable
                       A teak copy of the original VOC gable
                       reflects martial symbols: a banner,
                         flags, drums and cannon balls.  Leerdam Bastion
                                                     Leerdam, Oranje, Nassau,
                                                  Catzenellenbogen and Buuren
                                                     were titles held by Prince
                                                        William of Orange.




















                                                       The Castle Entrance
                                              The original bell, cast in Amsterdam in
                                            1697, still hangs in the belfry. The coat of
                                             arms of the United Netherlands can be
                                             seen on the pediment above the gate.









                         . De Kat Balcony
           The original staircase, built in 1695 as part of a
           defensive crosswall, divided the square into an
             inner and outer court, and was remodelled
                       between 1786 and 1790.
