M oles spend nearly all their life underground, and they are
digging machines. Their hands are curved into shovels—
great for scooping out earth to make long tunnels. They pop up
onto the surface sometimes, pushing soil onto the ground and
making volcano-shaped molehills.
Moles’ eyes are so tiny, they can barely see. They feel their
way along their dark tunnels using their nose and whiskers.
Juicy earthworms are what they’re after. The star-nosed mole has
twenty-two little pink arms around its nose, which it uses to sniff out
food. It hunts in water as well as soil, and gobbles a meal in
0.2 seconds. That’s faster than any other mammal!
