Cobra
T he king cobra is the world’s longest venomous snake. It is
the length of three human adults put together, and just one
bite contains enough venom to kill twenty people. Fortunately, their
favorite food is other snakes.
Cobras have a superpower—to appear bigger than they are. They
bring the front part of their body up into a “standing” position. At the
same time they spread their ribs and suck air into their lungs to form
a hood. King cobras can “stand” 5 ft (1.5 m) tall! Some religions tell
stories about legendary cobras called nagas, which can have more
than one head and turn into humans.
It is a myth that all snakes hiss—
king cobras growl like angry dogs!
