Tiger
W hen prowling through tall trees and waving grass, the tiger’s
beautiful striped fur is the perfect disguise. Tigers are the
world’s largest, most powerful cats. They hunt alone, often at night.
Hidden by their coat, tigers wait patiently for a deer or buffalo to
pass. They pounce suddenly, biting their prey’s throat and holding on
until it is dead. However, most hunts fail—it’s not easy being a tiger.
Tigers were once found all over south Asia, but people have hunted
them and cut their forests down, making them endangered. Today,
most live in India. In the Hindu religion, the goddess Durga is
sometimes shown riding a tiger.
