                         W         hen prowling through tall trees and waving grass, the tiger’s



                                   beautiful striped fur is the perfect disguise. Tigers are the
                         world’s largest, most powerful cats. They hunt alone, often at night.

                         Hidden by their coat, tigers wait patiently for a deer or buffalo to
                         pass. They pounce suddenly, biting their prey’s throat and holding on

                         until it is dead. However, most hunts fail—it’s not easy being a tiger.

                         Tigers were once found all over south Asia, but people have hunted

                         them and cut their forests down, making them endangered. Today,
                         most live in India. In the Hindu religion, the goddess Durga is

                         sometimes shown riding a tiger.
