A
male peafowl, called a peacock, has a train of fabulous
feathers. He fans it out, then twirls and bows down so that the
eyelike spots on it shimmer. He is trying to catch the attention of a
female, called a peahen. She will choose the male with the biggest,
brightest train, so although it makes it hard to fly, he grows a train up
to 5 ft (1.6 m) long!
The males of the Indian peafowl are blue and green, and the females
are mostly brown. However, sometimes a peafowl is born with all
white feathers. Peacocks can be very noisy. The males scream
“Ah-ahh!” at the top of their voice, often in the middle of the night.
