I n many books and movies, the lion is “king of the beasts.” The

ancient Egyptians had a warrior goddess with the head of a
lioness, and some of the oldest cave paintings are of lions. Lions form
groups called prides, which are made up mainly of lionesses and their

cubs. One to three males also join the pride, but only for a few years.

Lionesses are faster than male lions, so the females team up to hunt.
Often they set traps for prey—one trick is to surprise animals as they

drink at a water hole. All lions can roar, and they figure out how big
other prides are by how many different roars they hear.
