Zebra
I s a zebra black with white stripes? Or white with black stripes?
You decide! Every zebra’s pattern is different, just like a bar code.
It used to be thought that the stripes made it more difficult for
predators to catch a zebra. However, it’s now thought that the black
and white bars might prevent bites from flies, because these insects
avoid striped surfaces.
Zebras are wild horses that live in the wide savannas of Africa.
One story told by the San people of southern Africa describes how
the zebra got its stripes—they say it was originally white all over, but
was left with scorch marks after falling into a fire.
A zebra hoof is actually
a huge toenail!
