Puma
Pumas cannot roar, but just like
a pet cat, they can purr.
A
mysterious cat, the puma has many names, including
mountain lion and cougar. Pumas live in all sorts of different
habitats from mountains and forests to deserts and swamps, but they
are rarely seen by humans. They are often caught only by hidden
cameras—one camera even captured a puma walking past the
famous Hollywood sign in the hills above Los Angeles, California.
Pumas have a special place in the history of the Americas. They
appear in many Native American and early South American stories
and artworks. Unfortunately, these beautiful animals have been
hunted for their fine fur. Today, the puma is protected in most
countries where it lives.
