A n ostrich would beat you in a race, however hard you tried!
In short bursts ostriches can reach 43 mph (70 kph). These
feathered giants are the tallest, heaviest birds in the world, and they
can’t fly. Instead, they wander across savannas and deserts on foot.
The female ostrich is brown, but the male has black and white
feathers, and sometimes a bright pink neck and legs. He crouches
down and swishes his wings around to impress a watching female.
If she likes him she will lay her eggs in the nest he has
made. People used to think that when an ostrich
was frightened, it buried its head in the sand—
it’s a myth, though!
