Gorilla
G orillas are Africa’s gentle giants. These great apes are
mainly vegetarian, eating leaves and fruits. An adult gorilla
may munch 66 lb (30 kg) of plants a day. After eating fruits from
trees, gorillas help spread the seeds—in their poop. Because of
this, many forest trees depend on them.
Each gorilla family is ruled by a huge male—the silverback.
His muscles are massive, and his head has a large bony
lump on top. When the silverback is annoyed, he beats
his chest and throws plants around. However, fights
between gorillas are unusual. Baby gorillas enjoy cuddles
and piggyback rides from their mother and aunts.
