Giant panda
Baby pandas are born pink and have very little fur.
They grow their black-and-white coat by three weeks old.
H igh up in China’s cool, wet mountains you might spot a giant
panda. Local people call them “bamboo bears,” after the
panda’s favorite food. Bamboo is a tall type of grass that pandas
love. They spend half of every day sitting and eating. They even
have a special wrist bone that works like a thumb to help them hold
sticks of bamboo.
All over the world, pandas are famous because they have become so
rare. To save the species, China has set up panda breeding centers,
where many cubs are born. Some of the center workers dress as
pandas so the cubs don’t get too used to humans.
