       Visitors to the Historical Museum
of the City of Vienna are greeted
by a vast model of the city from
       the era when the Ringstrasse
       was developed. The exhibition
       covers nearly 3,000 years of
urban history. It illus trates the
lives of its first settlers and life in
       the Roman camp of Vindobona,
       and it chronicles the threat
       from Turkish invaders and the
subse quent rise of Vienna to
       the magnificent capital of a
       great empire.
         The museum has collections
       of memorabilia of many of
       Vienna’s famous citizens. Perhaps
       the most interesting of these
       are the reconstructed apart
       ments of the writer Franz
       Grillparzer (1791–1872) and
       the architect Adolf Loos
       (1870–1933).
