Barrio Bolívar
A stroll three blocks southeast of Parque Cervantes down Calle “A” Norte takes you
back to the city’s colonial past in Barrio Bolívar, where the district’s ever decreasing
sprinkling of russet tiles, balconies and intricate wrought iron holds out against
encroaching modern architecture. The historic colonial mansion on the corner with
Avenida 8 Este was occupied by successive generations of the distinguished Obaldía
family – José Vicente was the president of New Granada (combined Colombia and
Panama) and his son José Domingo became the second president of Panama. Just east
of here, a crumbling bell tower stands over the messily restored nineteenth-century
Catedral San José de David. See what you make of the renovated colonial Romanesque
facade and the interior’s gaudy murals.
Pedregal
10km south of David • Buses leave from Av 2 Este between C Central and C “A” Norte (6am–11pm; every 10–15min; 15min)
Beyond the airport, the road fizzles out at Pedregal, David’s small port and marina,
which provides entry by boat into the morass of mangroves and islands in the Golfo
de Chiriquí. At weekends, La Cocaleca (T730 5583, Wlacocalecapty.com; $5–20), a
popular cruising boat, leaves the jetty at set times to tour the mangroves or venture
further out into the gulf.
